How to Tape a Hockey Stick

The Art in Taping Your Hockey Stick

Hockey is a wonderful sport, and it takes more than just skill to be good at it. Just like anything you do you need to have the right gear for the job. What I am going to be showing you today is a how to on taping your hockey stick. Taping your stick protects your blade from chipping the  paint away and also it makes the stick look nicer.

Step 1-  First of all you need to have tape for your stick, doesn’t matter what color as long as you have enough for the job. Also you will need scissors and wax if you want it.

Step 2-  Get your stick the place the tape at the the heel of the blade, which is the very back part of the blade and start to tape it, make sure you don’t leave gaps in between the tape, also don’t wrinkle the tape either because then the tape job will look messy. Make sure to go a bit beyond the blade at the end of the blade so it will have a nice finish.

Step 3-  Now it’s time to use the scissors. Since you went tape a bit beyond the blade you now cut of the excess tape from the toe or end of the blade.

Step 4-  This step is not really necessary but if you want you can get the wax it can be candle wax or actual stick wax for hockey to wax your blade. (Note that if you use candle wax and it is color other than the color of tape you used it will leave marks on your tape). All you do is take the wax and cover the whole blade, this helps from snow sticking to the blade when you are playing.

Time Capsule

Part 1 Time Capsule

One item that I would put into a time capsule for people in the year 2116, would be a chainsaw or something along the lines if it. I would put this in it to show what most people in Blackville and even Miramichi do for a living which is working in the forestry industry. I can think of a bunch of people who work in the forestry industry, I have four neighbors that have a job in that line of work alone. Maybe the whole chainsaw would be too big to put in a time capsule so maybe a video of someone using one, or maybe even a toy, but people might be confused of a toy of a chainsaw in the year 2116. I chose this item because it shows people in the future our culture and how some people make a living.

The second item I would chose to put into a time capsule to show the people of 2116, would be an item that the majority of the population of Blackville love is hockey. I mean you can’t put the whole sport of hockey in a time capsule but some things that are a part of the game. For example, I would put in a hockey stick, gloves, skates, a helmet and of course a puck. All these things are a major part of the great game that I love. Also, I could put in a video of how the sport of hockey is played, because we don’t know if people in the year 2116 know how to play hockey, which would be a shame. This/these items show would people in Blackville do for a pastime and hobby, it also shows a part of our culture.

The third item that I would choose to show the people of 2116 what Blackville is like in 2016, is some sort of thing that shows our technology. I think that a phone would be the best choice. The phones we have today can do so much. You can call people, play games, even know you can keep track of your footsteps. A phone would show people in 2116 how advanced our technology was, I mean a phone in 2116 might like an ancient artifact, but to us now it is the latest things in technology. This item shows the people of, not so much Blackville, but the world’s intelligence.

The fourth item that I believe should be in a time capsule would be something that everyone loves. What I think should also go into a time capsule would be something from Tim Hortons. I don’t think that an actually cup of coffee would work because it would definitely be cold be the time the capsule would be opened. Just putting in the cup would be a perfect. Tim’s is such an important thing to the people of Blackville and also all of New Brunswick, so I think it should be apart of the time capsule. A cup from Tim Hortons would show what people of 2016 love, that's why I think it should be apart of the time capsule.

The fifth and final thing that should be put into a time capsule would pictures showing people from the future what life was like in 2016. People can put together a photo album with picture of Blackville and the different hot spots where people today go to often. Also the album can include pictures of the different seasons especially winter because we never know if in the year 2116 they may not have winter. This item would be a great idea for a time capsule because it could give a comparison of what life is like now, then 100 years from now.

Part 2- Letter

Dear people of the 2116,

Hello, I am a teenager from 2016 who’s name is Maguire and I am writing this letter to you to show what life was like in this period of time. Also what people like to do in New Brunswick and what New Brunswick stood for, along with who I was as a person and some things about my family. As you are reading this letter I want to tell you about how each thing that I put in the time capsule represents me and the village of Blackville, also things that represent New Brunswick as well.

Life in 2016, is probably very very different from what life is like when you are reading this. I am sure a lot of things have changed, probably for the good and some probably for the bad. I am going to tell you about what life was like in this time period, and why a chainsaw represents things that happened in Blackville, New Brunswick. The chainsaw is important hing to Blackville because of our forestry industry, I know at least 4 of my neighbors who work in the woods. That's why I sent you a chainsaw, it's not a threat or anything it is just showing what most people do for work and that's why it is important to the people of New Brunswick and Blackville. Now that I got that out of the way, I am going to tell you more about life in Blackville.

Blackville is a very small village that has a school from K-12 that only has about less than 600 kids who go to Blackville school. Also the population of Blackville is only around 1000 people which is pretty small. Maybe by the time that 100 years go by things might be different in Blackville. Maybe the small little village turned into a city? Or maybe there is no such thing as Blackville anymore, which would suck because this is my hometown and my family and I lived here in Blackville.

My family got along very well with each other, they loved having family events and getting the family together. They enjoyed being in each other’s company very much. My family consists of my Dad, my Mom, my brother, me, also my dog Chip, and yes that is his name. We were a small family that just rolled along with life.

Some recent things that have happened in 2016 is that recently in Paris, France and also Brussels, Germany there has been terrorists attacks that killed hundreds of people all together. At this point in time in society we seem to be always fighting one another and it is just going to destroyed ourselves in the end. On the brighter side of things, NASA launched its Juno spacecraft in 2011, and, after a nearly five-year voyage, it should go into orbit around Jupiter on July 4. It’s mission is to get data and pictures to find out more on the planet origins, also on its atmosphere, structure and what drives its magnetic field.I think that that is pretty cool. Another thing is that the Queen Elizabeth just turned 90 years old. Since 2016 just started not much new “cool” things have happened recently, usually it is just all about politics now. That is what life is like now in 2016, a lot of things had probably changed but this is just a insight on life in 2016

Sincerely, Maguire

The Hockey Story

The Hockey Story

By: Maguire Gillespie

There was a little boy who’s name was Billy, ever since he was able to walk he was skating. It was a thing Billy and his Father shared because hockey was his favorite sport to play. Just like all little boy’s Billy wanted to be just like his Dad. Billy had been waiting for the hockey season all year long and finally it was here, and he hoped he improved since last year even with the lack of practice; because his father had gone away for work. During this hockey season Billy hopes that his luck will finally turn around and his team will win the banner.

“Let’s go Mom, we are going to be late for practice.” Billy said

“Okay, Okay, I’m ready to go. Go hop in the car, I will be out in minute.” Ordered Billy’s Mother.

Billy was a part of the Renous Whoopers. Even though last year he didn’t get any goals, he was determined. So he set his own personal goal to get 10 goals by the end of the hockey season.

“Yay! We’re here at last” Billy said with excitement in his voice.

Billy walked into the rink and what he saw was a beautiful ice surface with the blue and red lines freshly done over, he could smell the stench of hockey equipment, and the also the wonderful smell of fries and burgers beginning cooked at the canteen.

“Welcome back Billy” Coach Stanley said.

“It’s good to be back” Billy replied

The season went pretty quick and it was down to the last game, this game would decide if the Renous Whoopers would go on and play for the banner that the whole team wanted all so badly. There was one problem though, Billy and his team had to play against the Townville River Rats, who beat Renous all season long.

“Let’s go guys, we can beat these guys” Coach Stanley cheered
“But they are so good and they hadn’t lost a game all year” Jack mentioned

“All we need to is shoot, pass and skate really fast” Coach Stanley chanted.

Billy thought to himself.

“This season I got nine goals, but my goal was to get 10, it would be awesome if I got one against our rivals”

The game started and right away River Rats scored first, but Renous was hanging in there. Then on one lucky play Joe the defense for Renous took a shot and the puck went off of the players on the other team and it went in.

The second period went on but nothing happened which was scary because the next goal could be the game winner.

“Go go, skate skate.” the crowd roared.

The period ended, and went on to the third period where again no goals were scored, so the game went into overtime.

It was the final minute and Billy was on the ice, they were skating up the ice hard when Jack passed the puck to Billy.

“Shoot, shoot” Jack yelled

Billy did and scored right over the goalies glove. They won, and Billy got his 10th goal which he wanted so badly. The team went on to celebrate and moved on to actually win the banner. Billy realized that they had accomplished this because of hard work and teamwork. Also he found out that if you put your mind to it you can do anything.

Tips on Writing Stories for Children

What I found particularly helpful was to not use flashbacks because it can be confusing to younger kids. Another thing that I found helpful was to just use one main conflict in the story, because if you do more the story may become to complicated from kids. Some information that was similar in some of my other blog posts was when I analyzed some children's stories most of them were based off some of the information I read. In the article I read there is a bit of information on dialogue, some info that i learned was that in novels the dialogue is used to express the relationships between characters, also it is used to move the story along, and to create drama and tension in the story.  What I think that should be part of the grading rubric is, is the story appealing to a younger audience. Also another thing that I think should be a part of the rubric is, does the story have dialogue and does it help the story move along and create relationships between characters.

Analyzing Children Stories

The Little Gingerbread Man

The main character in the story is a gingerbread man and also a butterfly. In the story, there is lots of dialogue which helps the story move along and also to help understand more of what the characters are thinking and feeling. In the children's story The Little Ginger Bread Man the conflict is that the gingerbread man is trying not to get eaten by other things like horses, dogs and even a fox. I think that kids can understand the conflict in the story. In the end the butterfly takes the gingerbread man and brings him a place in the forest were there is 2 other gingerbread people, a man and a women who take in the gingerbread man as there kid.

Buzzy Bee

In this very short kids story the main character is a just a bee. There is no dialogue in this story. I the story the only conflict is that the bee tries to gets one more flower bit is to heavy because of all the nectar that he already has. I'm pretty sure that kids could understand the conflict in the story Buzzy Bee. The conflict is resolved by the bees friends saving him and because he is about to fall.

Wolstencroft The Bear

The main character is this story is Wolstencroft the teddy bear. In this children's story there is a lot of dialogue, the dialogue is about Wolstencroft expressing his thoughts and feelings as the story moves along.  The conflict is that Wolstencroft didn't get to go to a new home he had to stay in the store, later in the story they found out that it was his name that held him back from being picked.

These three children's stories are similar because all three end in a happy ending. I think that these children's stories are appealing to kids because the always end with a happy ending and also because the stories have a lovable character in them which kids like.
