Fiction Fun

The Trade Off-

Being a character is a hit movie or tv show would be awesome, especially if the character was actually a cool person. In this assignment I will take the role as a character in a movie or TV show, also I will be telling you why I want to be this character.

The person that I chose to be is Sam Witwicky, Sam is a guy person in the first 3 Transformers movies, he is also pretty much the main character in all 3 of the Transformers movies. Sam is played by Shia Labeouf, and in my opinion he plays the part perfectly. Sam is a guy who goes through his high school, college and later gets a job,all while being a hero, you can say. Another reason why I would like to be Sam is because of all the Transformers that he is around, which I will get into in the next paragraph.
Sam drove an old camaro which he had no idea would change his life because of it. That old camaro was a Transformer named Bumble Bee. Sam was then forced into a life that is very dangerous but also pretty cool. Besides being shot at by huge alien robots, Sam gets to be around cool cars and trucks that also are transformers. I think that it would be pretty awesome to get to hangout with Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, and also all the other ones. Sam would be able to ride in any car that he wanted as long as they were on the auto bots side. The one I would like to drive in the most would be Bumble Bee, my reasoning's are in the next paragraph.

Imagine this, you get an old 1977 camaro that is pretty beat up and doesn't run all that well, but it is your first car so you love it. Now you get into some trouble with a weird cop car who turns out to be a Decepticon. Now your old beat up camaro turns out to be a massive fighting robot. This would be a lot to take in but this huge robot just saved your life and turned into a brand new camaro, which you have no idea how but you just go with it. I think that driving in this car would be a life goal, I mean you are driving a Transformer, who wouldn't want to do that. Also Bumble Bee talks through the radio which at first could be kind of crazy but overall would be the best thing ever.

These are all my reason why I would trade off with Sam Witwicky in a heartbeat. I could be a hero that saved the world more than once, be able to hangout with all the auto bots, and to top it all off I my first car would be Bumble Bee. Sam would be such a cool person to be and that’s why I would like to be him.

What About the Bad Guy-

In pretty much every movie there is usually always a protagonist and antagonist. It what makes a movie interesting because it creates conflict. In mostly every movie where there is a good guy and a bad guy the bad guy gets defeated one way or another, it happens pretty much every time. But what if the bad guy doesn’t really deserve to be bad and is just stuck with a bad reputation, just because of one thing that happened. In my opinion the bad guy that doesn't really deserve to get a break is Mega Mind, who was in his own movie of course Mega Mind.

Mega Mind is from another planet of course, he is blue you know. His parents sent him on an escape pod that was being sent to Earth. Mega Mind has on route to a pretty good place on Earth, but turns out Metro Man is from the same planet and his parents are doing the same thing. So while in the air Metro Mans pod hits Mega minds and then Mega Mind ends up crashing at a not so nice place compared to what he was suppose to go. So how can you not feel bad for him, I mean he didn’t do anything, so why did he have to have a sort of conflict already with Metro Man. Even when the two were kids Mega Mind would be doing his own thing you know doing some minor mischief and the Metro Man would ruin it for him. This is one reason why I have sympathy for Mega Mind

Some things that Mega Mind had done in the past were probably minor things compared to what other super villains do. In the beginning of the movie he is broken out of jail by his side kick. Which he did fairly easily, I mean if you were in Mega Mind's position and you see an open door you would take it too. As soon as he gets out Metro Man who is the protagonist is right on his trail. I mean give the guy a break all he is trying to do is take over the world. The least he can do is give him a bit of leeway and then stop him when he is about to do something at the end.

During the movie Metro Man ends up disappearing and Mega Mind uses this opportunity to take over Metro City. Then later on Mega Mind needs Metro Mans help so he tries and get him back to fight a greater force which Mega Mind created. So Metro Man helps out and comes out of hiding. So in the end everything goes back to normal right, but Mega Mind showed a good side that most people didn’t see coming. That's why I feel sorry for Mega Mind and think that he deserves better

Mega mind, lost his parents, had conflict with Metro Man that he didn’t even want, and also most of his childhood was ruined because Metro Man took the fun out of everything Mega Mind and got him in trouble. Those are all the reasons why I have sympathy for Mega Mind.

Dear Diary-
War is something that no man should go through, you see things that you just can’t unsee you do things no man shouldn’t, you hear the screams of your friends every night when you go to sleep. There is just something about war and battle that makes you remember everything and forget nothing.

I knew that it would be a long time getting to Thermopylae but it's the second day and with all these armor and my shield, I'm starting to get pretty tired. The faces the men are stone cold and have no expressions. As we keep marching though I realize that this will most likely be my last fight, especially if those Persian cowards use their bows, we don’t have much of a chance, but that's no way to think when you're about to go to battle. The men who had trained me ever since I was 7 years old, would have kicked my butt for ever thinking that us Spartans could possibly lose.

Today is the day, we will fight for our freedom, and send the Persians back where they came from, at least that's the plan. Everyone is siked up and are ready to fight. Today’s battle we came out victorious, we have a good chance of winning.
As morning comes we all know that Xerxes is going to throw nearly everything he has at us to hope and kill us all, but he has another thing coming. We just got word that Themistocles is doing his part by defending the strait at Salamis, but if he gets defeated then the Persians will be able to get in behind us, so hopefully he keeps doing well.
Now the third day has come and I think it is the last day of this battle, what I still don’t know what they outcome will be. I am hoping that my men and I will be able to go home to see our wives and kids. It would mean the world to me to get to be able to get one more hug from my son before he goes off to training since he is just about to turn 7. We are getting ready to go up the battlefield now and we are preparing our bodies for death. Our tradition. It is an honnor to die during battles, yet part of me wants to go home...

How to Tape a Hockey Stick

The Art in Taping Your Hockey Stick

Hockey is a wonderful sport, and it takes more than just skill to be good at it. Just like anything you do you need to have the right gear for the job. What I am going to be showing you today is a how to on taping your hockey stick. Taping your stick protects your blade from chipping the  paint away and also it makes the stick look nicer.

Step 1-  First of all you need to have tape for your stick, doesn’t matter what color as long as you have enough for the job. Also you will need scissors and wax if you want it.

Step 2-  Get your stick the place the tape at the the heel of the blade, which is the very back part of the blade and start to tape it, make sure you don’t leave gaps in between the tape, also don’t wrinkle the tape either because then the tape job will look messy. Make sure to go a bit beyond the blade at the end of the blade so it will have a nice finish.

Step 3-  Now it’s time to use the scissors. Since you went tape a bit beyond the blade you now cut of the excess tape from the toe or end of the blade.

Step 4-  This step is not really necessary but if you want you can get the wax it can be candle wax or actual stick wax for hockey to wax your blade. (Note that if you use candle wax and it is color other than the color of tape you used it will leave marks on your tape). All you do is take the wax and cover the whole blade, this helps from snow sticking to the blade when you are playing.

Time Capsule

Part 1 Time Capsule

One item that I would put into a time capsule for people in the year 2116, would be a chainsaw or something along the lines if it. I would put this in it to show what most people in Blackville and even Miramichi do for a living which is working in the forestry industry. I can think of a bunch of people who work in the forestry industry, I have four neighbors that have a job in that line of work alone. Maybe the whole chainsaw would be too big to put in a time capsule so maybe a video of someone using one, or maybe even a toy, but people might be confused of a toy of a chainsaw in the year 2116. I chose this item because it shows people in the future our culture and how some people make a living.

The second item I would chose to put into a time capsule to show the people of 2116, would be an item that the majority of the population of Blackville love is hockey. I mean you can’t put the whole sport of hockey in a time capsule but some things that are a part of the game. For example, I would put in a hockey stick, gloves, skates, a helmet and of course a puck. All these things are a major part of the great game that I love. Also, I could put in a video of how the sport of hockey is played, because we don’t know if people in the year 2116 know how to play hockey, which would be a shame. This/these items show would people in Blackville do for a pastime and hobby, it also shows a part of our culture.

The third item that I would choose to show the people of 2116 what Blackville is like in 2016, is some sort of thing that shows our technology. I think that a phone would be the best choice. The phones we have today can do so much. You can call people, play games, even know you can keep track of your footsteps. A phone would show people in 2116 how advanced our technology was, I mean a phone in 2116 might like an ancient artifact, but to us now it is the latest things in technology. This item shows the people of, not so much Blackville, but the world’s intelligence.

The fourth item that I believe should be in a time capsule would be something that everyone loves. What I think should also go into a time capsule would be something from Tim Hortons. I don’t think that an actually cup of coffee would work because it would definitely be cold be the time the capsule would be opened. Just putting in the cup would be a perfect. Tim’s is such an important thing to the people of Blackville and also all of New Brunswick, so I think it should be apart of the time capsule. A cup from Tim Hortons would show what people of 2016 love, that's why I think it should be apart of the time capsule.

The fifth and final thing that should be put into a time capsule would pictures showing people from the future what life was like in 2016. People can put together a photo album with picture of Blackville and the different hot spots where people today go to often. Also the album can include pictures of the different seasons especially winter because we never know if in the year 2116 they may not have winter. This item would be a great idea for a time capsule because it could give a comparison of what life is like now, then 100 years from now.

Part 2- Letter

Dear people of the 2116,

Hello, I am a teenager from 2016 who’s name is Maguire and I am writing this letter to you to show what life was like in this period of time. Also what people like to do in New Brunswick and what New Brunswick stood for, along with who I was as a person and some things about my family. As you are reading this letter I want to tell you about how each thing that I put in the time capsule represents me and the village of Blackville, also things that represent New Brunswick as well.

Life in 2016, is probably very very different from what life is like when you are reading this. I am sure a lot of things have changed, probably for the good and some probably for the bad. I am going to tell you about what life was like in this time period, and why a chainsaw represents things that happened in Blackville, New Brunswick. The chainsaw is important hing to Blackville because of our forestry industry, I know at least 4 of my neighbors who work in the woods. That's why I sent you a chainsaw, it's not a threat or anything it is just showing what most people do for work and that's why it is important to the people of New Brunswick and Blackville. Now that I got that out of the way, I am going to tell you more about life in Blackville.

Blackville is a very small village that has a school from K-12 that only has about less than 600 kids who go to Blackville school. Also the population of Blackville is only around 1000 people which is pretty small. Maybe by the time that 100 years go by things might be different in Blackville. Maybe the small little village turned into a city? Or maybe there is no such thing as Blackville anymore, which would suck because this is my hometown and my family and I lived here in Blackville.

My family got along very well with each other, they loved having family events and getting the family together. They enjoyed being in each other’s company very much. My family consists of my Dad, my Mom, my brother, me, also my dog Chip, and yes that is his name. We were a small family that just rolled along with life.

Some recent things that have happened in 2016 is that recently in Paris, France and also Brussels, Germany there has been terrorists attacks that killed hundreds of people all together. At this point in time in society we seem to be always fighting one another and it is just going to destroyed ourselves in the end. On the brighter side of things, NASA launched its Juno spacecraft in 2011, and, after a nearly five-year voyage, it should go into orbit around Jupiter on July 4. It’s mission is to get data and pictures to find out more on the planet origins, also on its atmosphere, structure and what drives its magnetic field.I think that that is pretty cool. Another thing is that the Queen Elizabeth just turned 90 years old. Since 2016 just started not much new “cool” things have happened recently, usually it is just all about politics now. That is what life is like now in 2016, a lot of things had probably changed but this is just a insight on life in 2016

Sincerely, Maguire

The Hockey Story

The Hockey Story

By: Maguire Gillespie

There was a little boy who’s name was Billy, ever since he was able to walk he was skating. It was a thing Billy and his Father shared because hockey was his favorite sport to play. Just like all little boy’s Billy wanted to be just like his Dad. Billy had been waiting for the hockey season all year long and finally it was here, and he hoped he improved since last year even with the lack of practice; because his father had gone away for work. During this hockey season Billy hopes that his luck will finally turn around and his team will win the banner.

“Let’s go Mom, we are going to be late for practice.” Billy said

“Okay, Okay, I’m ready to go. Go hop in the car, I will be out in minute.” Ordered Billy’s Mother.

Billy was a part of the Renous Whoopers. Even though last year he didn’t get any goals, he was determined. So he set his own personal goal to get 10 goals by the end of the hockey season.

“Yay! We’re here at last” Billy said with excitement in his voice.

Billy walked into the rink and what he saw was a beautiful ice surface with the blue and red lines freshly done over, he could smell the stench of hockey equipment, and the also the wonderful smell of fries and burgers beginning cooked at the canteen.

“Welcome back Billy” Coach Stanley said.

“It’s good to be back” Billy replied

The season went pretty quick and it was down to the last game, this game would decide if the Renous Whoopers would go on and play for the banner that the whole team wanted all so badly. There was one problem though, Billy and his team had to play against the Townville River Rats, who beat Renous all season long.

“Let’s go guys, we can beat these guys” Coach Stanley cheered
“But they are so good and they hadn’t lost a game all year” Jack mentioned

“All we need to is shoot, pass and skate really fast” Coach Stanley chanted.

Billy thought to himself.

“This season I got nine goals, but my goal was to get 10, it would be awesome if I got one against our rivals”

The game started and right away River Rats scored first, but Renous was hanging in there. Then on one lucky play Joe the defense for Renous took a shot and the puck went off of the players on the other team and it went in.

The second period went on but nothing happened which was scary because the next goal could be the game winner.

“Go go, skate skate.” the crowd roared.

The period ended, and went on to the third period where again no goals were scored, so the game went into overtime.

It was the final minute and Billy was on the ice, they were skating up the ice hard when Jack passed the puck to Billy.

“Shoot, shoot” Jack yelled

Billy did and scored right over the goalies glove. They won, and Billy got his 10th goal which he wanted so badly. The team went on to celebrate and moved on to actually win the banner. Billy realized that they had accomplished this because of hard work and teamwork. Also he found out that if you put your mind to it you can do anything.

Tips on Writing Stories for Children

What I found particularly helpful was to not use flashbacks because it can be confusing to younger kids. Another thing that I found helpful was to just use one main conflict in the story, because if you do more the story may become to complicated from kids. Some information that was similar in some of my other blog posts was when I analyzed some children's stories most of them were based off some of the information I read. In the article I read there is a bit of information on dialogue, some info that i learned was that in novels the dialogue is used to express the relationships between characters, also it is used to move the story along, and to create drama and tension in the story.  What I think that should be part of the grading rubric is, is the story appealing to a younger audience. Also another thing that I think should be a part of the rubric is, does the story have dialogue and does it help the story move along and create relationships between characters.

Analyzing Children Stories

The Little Gingerbread Man

The main character in the story is a gingerbread man and also a butterfly. In the story, there is lots of dialogue which helps the story move along and also to help understand more of what the characters are thinking and feeling. In the children's story The Little Ginger Bread Man the conflict is that the gingerbread man is trying not to get eaten by other things like horses, dogs and even a fox. I think that kids can understand the conflict in the story. In the end the butterfly takes the gingerbread man and brings him a place in the forest were there is 2 other gingerbread people, a man and a women who take in the gingerbread man as there kid.

Buzzy Bee

In this very short kids story the main character is a just a bee. There is no dialogue in this story. I the story the only conflict is that the bee tries to gets one more flower bit is to heavy because of all the nectar that he already has. I'm pretty sure that kids could understand the conflict in the story Buzzy Bee. The conflict is resolved by the bees friends saving him and because he is about to fall.

Wolstencroft The Bear

The main character is this story is Wolstencroft the teddy bear. In this children's story there is a lot of dialogue, the dialogue is about Wolstencroft expressing his thoughts and feelings as the story moves along.  The conflict is that Wolstencroft didn't get to go to a new home he had to stay in the store, later in the story they found out that it was his name that held him back from being picked.

These three children's stories are similar because all three end in a happy ending. I think that these children's stories are appealing to kids because the always end with a happy ending and also because the stories have a lovable character in them which kids like.

Review on a How to Article

http://www.wikihow.com/Pack-a-Sleeping-Bag

The How to article on how to pack a sleeping bag for backpacking.

Some characteristics that make a good how to article is, well for one, explain the the thing you are doing the How To on. Also another characteristic for making a good how to article would be to not over explain something and make the How To boring. In my opinion those are the only two things you should do in order to have a good How To article.

Rubric
5- All the time
4-Most of the time
3-Just over have the time
2- Below half the time
1-Rarely
0-Never

There are no more than three grammatical or spelling errors in the article.(5)
The article has a catchy headline that makes you want to read it. (3)
The article has a purpose, explaining benefits to the reader.(5)
The steps in the article are clear and easy to understand.(5)                            18/20

What I think is missing in the rubric to make a good how to article is, how boring it is or how interesting it is. If the article grabs the readers attention then is should get a 4 or 5 if it doesn't and it is very boring to read it should get a 1,2 or 3.

Movie Review: Finding Forrester

Finding Forrester Movie Review

The movie Finding Forrester appeared in the year 2000, the production company that brought us into the world of Jamal and William Forrester was Columbia. The two main actors in the film are Sean Connery and Rob Brown.
Finding Forrester is a film that at first glance to me was a movie that I would have no interest in and was only watching it because we had to in class. Once the movie started to pick up a bit it was more and more interesting to me. Finding Forrester is about a 16 year old boy named Jamal who lives in the bronx and plays basketball, but one talent that he has other than basketball is one that you wouldn’t expect is that he is an exceptional writer and writes on his own without anyone making him do it. Jamal who is played by (Rob Brown) befriends a very reclusive man who doesn’t leave his apartment, on accident who Jamal and his friends refer to him as the window. Jamal was dared by his friends to go into his apartment when he thought that the man was asleep but then was scared off by the man and forgets his pack, when he finally gets his pack back he noticed that his writing is marked by the man in the window then goes to the man's apartment and properly meets the who’s real name is William Forrester  who is played by (Sean Connery) and apologizes to him for going into his home. Then William helps Jamal with his work and then Jamal gets a scholarship to go to a private school where he can show his true talents as a writer. When Jamal gets his scholarship to a private school, one of his teachers are suspicious of his work because they don’t expect it from him and Mr. Crawford (the teacher) is also suspicious because of his background and his colour. That situation jeopardizes his chance of playing in a big basketball tournament. There is a lot of twist and turns in this movie and that just another great reason to watch this amazing film.
I could compare this movie to Chris Gardner and his story of being a homeless salesman to a multi millionaire the movie about Chris Gardner is “The Pursuit of Happiness”. I would compare Jamal to Chris in “The Pursuit of Happiness” because you would really expect greatness from them, It's kind of harsh to say but in the beginning of both movies both of them are just regular guys do there usually stuff, then something happens in there life that changes everything and they accomplish things that not many people would think. For example Jamal becomes one of the best in his private school which nobody would really think happen, but would got him at that point was meeting William Forrester which was the change in Jamal’s life.
In my opinion the part of the film that had really good quality was the acting I thought it was spot on. Sean Conner played his part well and was really into the movie, and Rob Brown who only auditioned just to be an extra but ended up getting the main character, you would think that he was acting in blockbuster films for years the way he played the part of Jamal. Sean Connery and Rob brown evolve throughout the film, Jamal was just a young man playing basketball and writing in his notebooks, but then we changed from that and embraced his talent of writing and earned a scholarship to Mailor which is a private school. Also William Forrester who is played by Sean Connery was just, what appeared to be an outcast who was constantly looking out of his window, to an author that made a sort of comeback and befriends Jamal.

The theme of this movie would be friendship and how crazy things that happen between people can evolve into something great. What I took from this film don’t judge a book by its cover for example just because someone came from a rough place doesn’t mean they can’t do something great. In the end I would highly recommend this movie to watch.

Movie Review- Fury

Movie Review (Fury)
The movie I selected is Fury, to me this film is on my top 10 list of favorite list. The web site I was on had a really good  review of the movie. The site compared Fury to other movies I watched and like such as “Saving Private Ryan” and “Inglourious Basterds”. I liked how they compared Fury to those titles because even if you haven't watched Fury but have watched “Saving Private Ryan” or “Inglourious Basterds” you can get a feel of what the movie will be like. Also all three movies are set in WW II

The review did well on not spoiling the movie, which is a good thing because who likes spoilers. The filmmakers did a good job with the movie at first you think that how can a movie just about a tank be good but it's a lot more than that, the movie is about the war the evilness of it and how war is not good for anyone.

The movie review did a really good job on review the film. In my opinion the review just made me like the movie more because it compared it to other films which I explained earlier. I think I like this movie so much because I like learning about the war and hearing stories about them. Also this movie is similar to some video games that I sometimes play which makes me familiar with the blood, guts and all the gore. This is the link to the movie review I talked about. http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/fury-2014

The Fresh Crisp Snow

In this setting, you can hear the crunch of the snow as you walk and also the sound of the snow underneath the snowboard as the snowboarder slides down the slope at a fast pace. The scent of winter was in the air, you could smell it as you breathed in the frosty air. In the background, there are people cheering on the snowboarder as he conquers the slopes. The image is a guy in the air about to slide across a rail to make an amazing jump that would shock us all, you can see the concentration in his face and how perfect his movements have to be in order to do the jump just right and not fall and get injured.

If I were in his position, I would want to try to pull off the best stunt/trick ever. Snowboarding is a very thrilling sport and is extreme just like a sport that I play and love which is hockey. In hockey, there are risks you take just like in snowboarding. For example: in hockey, when you go into the corner to try and fight for the puck, some huge guy can absolutely run you over but that was the risk that you took. In snowboarding pretty much the whole sport is a risk. For example when you go down a slope that your are not familiar with, you can run into some problems like obstacles that you have to overcome.

Writing Inventory Reflection

In my spare time I don't write at all, I usually just play video games or play hockey, and watch TV. I don't really have a favorite writer but if music counts my favorite writer/artist would be Witt Lowry because I just think his music is awesome and the story the songs tells are awesome as well. When I do write like in class when we have to I like writing about my own experiences and things I did so that could be characterized as narrative writing. The kind of writing that I find hard to do is descriptive because I just have a hard time at describing things for some reason it just doesn’t come easy. When I write I get my ideas from my experiences. I don’t have any writing pieces that i am working on because I don’t write on my spare time. One piece of writing that I am proud of is one that I did recently it was a book report that I thought I did well on even though i only got a mark that was low 80’s. For any school assignment I usually do a draft copy even though I only fixed a couple things in it.

As a writer I don’t have many strengths but one strength that I think I have is probably writing about sports because I love sports so I like writing about it. Some weaknesses that I have is like I said earlier is describing things. My favorite things to write about is sports like hockey and baseball. My goals as a writer in school is to get good grades on the assignments that I have to do, nothing special just get good grades.
